We are seeking an intern to play a major role in how we architect, visualize, and interpret critical data that is at the very core of our business. As a Data Science intern, you will be challenged with uncovering analytical insights through data mining and statistics and you will have the opportunity to translate those insights into actionable decisions for the business. You will gain first-hand experience solving some of the challenging problems facing the biotech industry today.

The Data Science internship is uniquely aligned to Amgen's newly developed full-time Data Science Rotation Program. This three-year rotation program exposes staff to three different Data Science related roles with potential opportunities in Research & Development, Global Commercial Operations, Strategy & Innovation, Information Systems, and other areas of the organization. Starting from Day One, interns are introduced to the many nuances and complexities of our organization and are asked to think creatively and independently to influence and drive decision-making.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Applying business knowledge in the analysis of big data

  • Producing project documentation including formal proposals and schedules, business requirements, functional specifications, project plans, test plans and test cases

  • Working closely with technical team members to translate business requirements into systems requirements

  • Coordinate development teams on large and/or complex projects; translate end user requirements for use by development teams

  • Assist on various ad-hoc research projects including experimentation with cutting-edge big data technologies

Basic Qualifications

Amgen requires that all individuals applying for an undergraduate internship or an undergraduate co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:

18 years or older

Currently enrolled in a full time Bachelor's Degree program from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent

Completion of one year of study from an accredited college or university prior to the internship commencing

Enrolled in a full time Bachelor's degree program following the potential internship or co-op assignment with an accredited college or university

Must not be employed at the time the internship starts

Preferred Qualifications

Degree concentration(s) in Business Analytics; Data Science; Computer Science; Biomedical, Computer, or Software Engineering; Mathematics; Computational Chemistry or Biology; Statistics; Information Systems; Relevant Programs

Junior standing with graduation in Summer 2020

Demonstrated aptitude and exposure with industry standard tools to execute and automate the more technical aspects of statistical data analysis, including SQL, R, SAS, Python (or equivalent)

Proficient in math, stats, programming

Experience with SQL and / or other BI tools

Highly motivated, self-starting nature; capable of and comfortable with independent critical thinking and problem solving; energized by change and challenge

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a particularly well-developed ability to display data and lead audiences to logical conclusions

Strong team player who can collaborate with colleagues on complex tasks

Track record of successfully owning, planning, and implementing multi-faceted projects

Experience with formal project methodologies
