The Safety Pharmacology and Animal Resources Center (SPARC) is currently seeking an experienced veterinarian with a research focus, and surgical experience, to work within our AAALAC accredited research facility. The veterinarian is expected to lead a new Discovery Services group within the SPARC organization at Amgen, and report to the Executive Director of SPARC. Discovery Services provides a wide range of basic and advanced technical support for pharmacology studies across multiple sites (non-GLP environment), and actively partners with drug discovery scientists. The Principal Veterinarian will lead a dynamic team overseeing all aspects of model development, internal study support and contributions to the veterinary care program. The contributions will be seen in the application of a strong veterinary medical and surgical background, with high quality technical and scientific leadership that will help advance new drugs through the pipeline.

Responsibilities:

Partner with departmental colleagues, and stakeholders (e.g., drug discovery or preclinical safety scientists) to assure that resources are used effectively to advance project goals

Manage a team of dedicated in vivo technical staff and oversee study execution, data analysis and reporting to project teams

Responsible and accountable for the delivery of high quality in vivo procedures, including surgery, anesthesia and analgesia to research models

Experience as a Principal Investigator, and in the writing and review of Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) protocols

Train staff in technical procedural skills for rodent and non-rodent species

Comply with guidelines, processes and procedures to meet federal, state and local regulatory requirements and maintain AAALAC accreditation

Provide laboratory expertise to the program of veterinary care and welfare compliance group

Provide On-Call Support (occasional)

Basic Qualifications:

A DVM degree with 4+ years post-graduate clinical or scientific project experience

Scientific and leadership experience in an academic, pharmaceutical or contract research lab environment

Preferred Qualifications:

DVM and PhD with 5+ years experience directly in complex animal model development in multiple species in a drug development setting

Licensed to practice in at least one state in the USA and ability to obtain California veterinary license within 1 year of hire

7 +years of postdoctoral training or experience in laboratory animal medicine

Board certification from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine

Exemplary communication, professionalism and interpersonal skills

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with discovery research scientists, and foster relationships with scientific and administrative staff from diverse educational and technical backgrounds

Experience with management of high performing teams, and staff development

Publication track record in the development of disease or surgical models
