Amgen Principal Information Systems Architect - Data Architecture in Thousand Oaks, California

Amgen is seeking a Principal Information Systems (IS) Architect - Data Architecture located in our global headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA and who will report up to the Director of Information Systems.

The Principal IS Architect - Data Architecture will work within the Operations IS (OIS) group to support the Process Development (PD) business organization. The Architect will contribute to the success of Operations IS functions by making fundamental improvements in how information is managed, business processes are operated, physical processes are controlled, and work flow is directed to efficiently achieve the integration and orchestration of all activities required for product development. Additionally, the Incumbent will attend strategic cross-functional meetings to facilitate the optimization of processes through implementation of solutions that enable enterprise-wide information knowledge management.

The Operations Information Systems team supports the Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Process Development functions to ensure they have the systems and processes necessary to supply lifesaving products to Amgen's Patients around the globe.

Responsibilities of the Principal Architect - Data Architecture includes:

  • Overall responsibility for the utility, quality and integrity of the PD Operations Data Lake

  • Works with projects and defines data architecture roadmap as well as synthesizes and aggregates demand and puts in place innovative data architectures to drive business results

  • Drives the creation of generally useful core entities for Operations Analytics and the creation of Unified Business Data Layer for PD

  • Engages with business users to analyze business needs, gather and document business and solution requirements around integrations with Data Sources and Analytic Solutions

  • Provides guidance to project teams on defining business needs, articulating solutions and approaches for addressing business needs, and presenting business cases for proposed solutions

  • Leads the technical design, development, testing, implementation, and support of key projects and data visualization, dashboards & reporting

  • Participates in the design, development and governance of Data Lake Data Architecture components.

  • Reviews project deliverables throughout development to ensure quality and traceability to requirements and adherence to all quality management plans and standards. Participate in quality management reviews

  • Works and collaborate with the IS Technical Architects in the Analytics & Knowledge Management team and vendors to determine the best technical solutions for OIS

  • Manages the backlog of requirements/user stories and oversee EDL (Enterprise Data Lake) specifications.

  • Prepares and maintain communication materials like roadmaps, position papers, presentations, demos, playbooks and socialize the materials with business clients and partner IS services

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Information Systems and/or Data Architecture experience


Master's degree and 4 years of Information Systems and/or Data Architecture experience


Bachelor's degree and 6 years of Information Systems and/or Data Architecture experience


Associate's degree and 10 years of Information Systems and/or Data Architecture experience


High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Information Systems and/or Data Architecture experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Data Architecture design and road mapping of complex systems

  • Solid understanding of Big Data Concepts and Technologies

  • Ability to effectively present information for all levels, and respond to questions from managers, clients, and customers

  • Solid experience and understanding in areas of data modeling, data quality, data management strategy to support business needs, data access methods, and approaches in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Hands-on experience with at-least two of the following technologies - Spotfire, Tableau, IBM Cognos, SAP Business Objects, IBM TM1, Micro Strategy

  • Big 4 Consulting experience

  • Ability to successfully develop, launch, and manage product offerings for Analytics and Reporting

  • Experience managing the end-to-end delivery of complex projects

  • Experience and familiarity with solutions on AWS

  • 4+ years of Life Science industry experience focused on analytics, business intelligence, reporting or data Management

  • Good overall understanding of business, manufacturing, and laboratory systems common in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as the integration of these systems through applicable standards

  • Understanding of FDA regulations governing computer system validation and operation in biotech manufacturing and laboratory areas
