Relocation in the form of a miscellaneous allowance will be provided for eligible candidates.

This role will be responsible for supporting laboratory process improvement projects across Therapeutic Discovery. The successful co-op will support high priority process improvement initiatives and work with process owners to identify areas for process automation, work standardization and optimization as well as other tasks and duties as identified.

Reporting to the Lab Process Excellence lead of Therapeutic Discovery, the co-op will:

  • Collaborate and advise the LPE lead in making decisions for the business to improve cycle time, labor intensiveness, quality and reduce variability of business processes.

  • Capture process data through multiple means including staff interviews, data base mining and manual collection

  • Develop and/or support and execute business cases and technical solutions to a wide range of business opportunities to address and eliminate bottlenecks in Therapeutic Discovery's key processes.

  • Analyze and assess performance data to identify improvement opportunities and solutions with minimal direction

  • Negotiate and positively influence both peers and key stakeholders to ensure improvements are sustainably implemented

  • Perform industry research to keep current on relevant improvement methodologies utilized within process improvement, human performance, organizational, strategic etc.

Basic Qualifications

Amgen requires that all individuals applying for a grad internship or a co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:

18 years or older

Graduated with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent

Completion as a first year graduate student before internship starts and currently enrolled in a Master's program for a Masters internship from an accredited college or university

Enrolled in an accredited college or university following the potential internship or co-op assignment

Must not be employed at the time the internship starts

Preferred Qualifications

Degree concentration in Engineering, Life Sciences, Business or related field

Six Sigma, Total Quality Management (TQM), Lean Manufacturing or other

continuous improvement methodology experience or understanding of concepts

Understanding of Pharmaceutical and/or Biotechnology industries

Project management experience understanding and awareness

Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and partner in a complex, matrix environment

Strong use of excel, PowerPoint, Spotfire, Visio and other Microsoft Office programs

Strong time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and develop communications to inform management of in progress and planned work

Strong analytical skills to assess performance, identify process improvement opportunities with minimal direction

Ability to develop tools to support process improvements, prioritize work and develop a business case for required resources to drive improvements

Excellent communication skills, both oral, written

Strong interpersonal skills necessary to forge consensus among competing client interests while ensuring objectives are met

Ability to understand technical problem-solving skills and business acumen

Familiarity with and desire to learn about research lab operations

Ability to collect, assemble and interpret data/information to enable relevant business analyses and influence decision-making

Ability to define a problem, develop a project scope and actionable objectives with measurable target to drive process improvements
