Amgen Executive Director, Global Strategic Sourcing in Thousand Oaks, California

The Executive Director of Global Strategic Sourcing (GSS) will provide leadership for developing strategic plan and execution for $3.5B spend partnering with Amgen's core business functions - R&D and Operations (Manufacturing, Process Development, Quality, Supply Chain, Engineering). Responsible for delivering savings targets and value capture through strategic category deployment, engagement in company-wide productivity program, and relationship management. It is global responsibility for leading sourcing staff based in critical business sites (corporate headquarters as well as key R&D and manufacturing locations). He/she will play a significant role as part of GSS leadership team to ensure delivery of effective procurement strategies and standards aligned to Amgen's business strategy and expectations.

Overall, this role serves as a strategic leader and an innovative problem solver effecting change and must have a demonstrated ability to think and act globally to lead and collaborate effectively on a cross-functional basis. He/she will be responsible to align the regional and global organization to maximize achievement of sourcing objectives and continuity of supply to position sourcing as a competitive advantage for the company.


  • Lead business engagement with stakeholders across R&D and Operations globally as well as direct the activities across roughly 20 market-facing spend categories through a team of 25 sourcing professionals; categories include Biometrics, Clinical Trials, Contract Manufacturing, Devices, Distribution, Equipment, Raw Materials

  • Provide strategic vision for the team that is aligned with the broader vision of GSS, which is to enable Amgen Strategy

  • Frame and drive productivity agenda linked to business strategy by leading team to leverage market insights and functional expertise in partnership with business

  • Drive innovation, ensure performance, and manage risks through supplier relationship management program integrated with category strategies

  • Integrate Supplier Diversity and Sustainability into category strategies

  • Continually assess the appropriate organizational structure and help prioritize resources and strategic priorities for the team to be engaging in

  • Engage in governance forums both at the business function level as well as initiative level

  • Drive results and create a sense of urgency through program management

  • Recruit and develop talent enabling staff to achieve their career goals

  • Develop and nurture productive relationships with both business partners and suppliers

  • Partner with GSS Leadership peers to evolve the organization as well as the culture that is welcoming to stakeholders and rewarding to staff

  • Ensure sustained execution of progressive global sourcing strategies, policies and procedures by understanding the strategic shifts of the company as well as supply markets

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of sourcing experience OR

  • Master's degree & 10 years of sourcing experience OR

  • Bachelor's degree & 12 years of sourcing experience AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years of experience in Sourcing functions or significant roles in business operations of a publicly held company with revenues of more than $10 billion and/or a spend base of at least $5 billion

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Business / Finance or related field

  • Has transformed the service delivery model at an organization and/or led through a transformation effort

  • Specific experience and thought leadership in maximizing productivity through use of innovative and progressive methods, as well as experience in navigating varying levels of change in a large corporate or multinational environment

  • Significant Sourcing experience in the R&D and Manufacturing preferred

  • Experience with large group leadership of a global organization

  • Experienced professional who functions well in a fast-paced, results-oriented, data-driven environment where collaboration and teamwork are critical

  • Be adaptable in approach and comfortable leading a geographically dispersed team

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, teamwork ability, analytical and organizational skills

  • Excellent written, presentation and communication skills
