Amgen Director Corporate Affairs - U.S. Business Operations in Thousand Oaks, California

USBO Director Corporate Affairs is responsible for driving internal and external communication strategy, planning, and implementation in USBO, an organization responsible for delivering more than $17B in product sales annually. The role reports to the Vice President, Corporate Affairs, and serves on the USBO Leadership Team.

Responsibilities:

  • Communication counsel and support for USBO leadership team, including the senior vice president, U.S. Commercial Operations

  • Oversee all external product communication (approvals, data publications, launches) in close partnership with the relevant Global Corporate Affairs colleagues

  • Oversee USBO-wide internal communication, including all-staff meetings, support for leadership presentations, and other key communication activities

  • Manage USBO Corporate Affairs staff (currently a team of five)

  • Maintain and upgrade USBO communication processes and policies

  • Ensure Corporate Affairs resources are deployed on highest business priorities to deliver greatest value

  • Partner with global colleagues to ensure issues and crisis management preparedness and handle communication issues in partnership with the relevant Global Corporate Affairs colleagues

  • Oversee all communication related to the annual Amgen Tour of California and other USBO-driven community activities

  • Act as an advocate, champion and expert for USBO within the wider Global Corporate Affairs team and serve as a role model for the function

  • Share and adopt best practices from across the Amgen regions and global team

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 4 years of Corporate Affairs, Communications, or Public Relations experience

  • OR

  • Master's degree and 8 years of Corporate Affairs, Communications, or Public Relations years

  • OR

  • Bachelor's degree and 10 years of Corporate Affairs, Communications, or Public Relations experience

  • AND

  • 4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Biotechnology, pharmaceutical or healthcare public relations and corporate experience

  • 10 years of related experience working in-house for a multinational company or within a PR agency serving multinationals.

  • Bachelor's Degree in public relations, communications or journalism

  • Strong oral and presentation skills; ability to negotiate and persuade

  • Superior writing skills and proven media relations skills that are results-oriented

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and deal with rapidly changing priorities

  • Ability to interact with all levels of management and manage staff and vendors

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; enthusiastic, team player and self-starter; serious commitment to hard work and excellence

  • Ability to productively navigate a challenging and dynamic environment

  • Understands nuances and details of specific company positions or issues that could affect communications tactics

  • Policy experience and crisis management experience

  • Independently judges risks and benefits from a communication perspective and makes a persuasive case for taking calculated risks in the organization's best interest

  • Shows organizational courage by tactfully challenging executives when providing communications counsel and feedback

  • Applies sound judgment and innovative thinking to resolve problems and take advantage of opportunities
