Amgen Senior Engineer- Final Product Technologies, Applied Sciences in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Amgen is searching for energetic and highly motivated candidates for its Final Product Technologies, Early Development & Applied Sciences team. This role will be based at our Innovation Center located at Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA and will report to the Senior Manager of Applied Sciences in the Final Product Technologies Early Development organization. Serving a technology strategy and advanced engineering function, the primary responsibility of the Senior Engineer is to conduct applied research and development in the field of drug delivery by identifying, assessing, and developing technologies for Amgen's drug delivery portfolio.

As a member of the Final Product Technologies Early Development Organization, work will focus on making supported recommendations and leading feasibility efforts for a range of drug delivery technologies as candidates for development into Amgen's technology portfolio. The Senior Engineer will have overall responsibility for their internally-funded research and development projects, including creation of project plans, management of technical progress, and budget. The qualified candidate will conduct hands-on work in close coordination with internal staff and external partners in the Innovation Center Laboratories to advance technologies from the proof-of-concept stage up to fully-functional prototypes. Current projects include high technical risk exploration responsibilities in the fields of material sciences, electrochemical sensors, microelectrode sensors, energy storage and solid-state electronics. Scope of traditional technologies includes; fluid transfer devices, biomarker sensing, primary drug containers, pen injectors, micro-infuser delivery systems, and secondary packaging. The Senior Engineer will work closely with cross-functional team members and business stakeholders for combination products and communicate with leadership on findings, results, and recommendations.

Position Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for engineering aspects of advancing technologies into short-cycle robust device development. This may be accomplished through directed design collaboration or direct design of technology solutions.

  • Oversight and execution of drug delivery technical assessment projects in different therapeutic areas, including nephrology, bone health, oncology, inflammation, cardiovascular, and neuroscience

  • Work on cross-functional teams including individuals across Marketing, Operations, and Development and serve as primary contact with Amgen's external partners

  • Work with Amgen's partners in the evaluation of device, diagnostics, and ancillary technologies

  • Serve as primary contact with external design, development, and research firms.

  • Provide subject expertise in the evaluation of technologies

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate Degree

OR

Master's Degree and 3 years of Engineering experience

OR

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of Engineering experience

OR

Associate's degree and 10 years of Engineering experience

OR

High school diploma/GED and 12 years of Engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent

  • Demonstrated success leading development of early stage medical device or drug delivery technologies

  • Success in strategic review and creation of intellectual property

  • 5 years in engineering of medical devices or medical diagnostics

  • Experience with electrochemical engineering processes and materials

  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing and six-sigma methodology

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience in management of external design, development, and research partners

  • Strong problem solving and risk management skills

  • Demonstrated success with technical diligence

  • Familiar with appropriate international design development standards

  • Experience with small scale electrochemical testing and electronics assembly

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations

  • Must be capable of working on multiple projects in a deadline driven environment

  • Strong decision making and organizational skills
